We don't got no Gravol!

Done exams, done shopping, done cleaning, (almost) done packing.
In a few hours Cyril and I are jumping a bus to my parents' house to spend Christmas with my family in the cold, cold desert.

When it's -12 out, this little feller is who's going to keep me warm!

My little brother's new kitten, Mango.

Waiting for us after the holidays back in Vancouver are a long-lost friend we met in Switzerland and her beau! I guess you won't be seeing too much of me around here until school starts again. Really, that will be sooner than I would like!

Merry Christmas, y'all.

Wednesday 9 December 2009

The heater is at an angle; isn't that weird?

Totally cruuushiiiiiin', totally not studyiiiiin'
(That was a song, fyi; à la Marshall [and increasingly, à la Cyril])

Totally diggin' sexy Betty Draper house slippers right now.
Why I am in love with "totally" tonight? Maybe 'cause I totally have a German lit exam tomorrow that I totally HATE. Maybe.

These were the first slippers that caught my eye:

Then the flood-gates opened and I was drowned in slipper delight.

Please don't make me do iiiiiiiit.

Pincurls! As promised.

(I named these photos on my computer "pincurl!" because can you really talk about pincurls without an exclamation mark? The answer is no, you can't.)

Night-time head-gear:

Under the head-gear:

After the head-gear:

I didn't know exactly what to do with the bangs and despite much Googleing, still have found no answer. How should one do short bangs with pincurls?

After "researching"(= tutorial-hopping on Youtube), I found these to be, by far, the most coherent and instructional videos on the entiiiire Internet.
It doesn't hurt, either, that Aya from Strawberry Koi is so gorgeous and so sweet and lovely.

UPDATE: Aya now has short bangs herself! Albeit adorbale Betty Page bangs that go well with curls, but I'm sure I will have more inspiration for my own now.

One last thing to add to the wonders of pincurls (along with their amazing shape and holding power that can be achieved with no other method and no-heat-required wonder), one morning I was feeling sassy (I was wearing faux-leather leggings, hello) so I dampened by hair slightly, and made 6-7 large pincurls, left them for about 30-50 minutes and it was magic. Because pincurls are magical.

Did you know I was putting off school work? Yeah, you probably did...

Sunday 29 November 2009

Give me shortbread any day.

It's been a while since I last did one of these.

As my whingy last post alluded to ('unabashedly declared' is more like it), it's been raining. Badly. And as I did not allude to in my last post, finals are quickly approaching and I'm feeling the pressure. Kind of badly. If I can just make it past Friday... so what I'm saying is, sorry for the absence. Rain & finals & papers = zero inspiration. It can only get better from here!

I took these in the morning before I left the house, so please, excuse the darkness and droopy eyes.

(I had done pincurls in my hair the night before - pictures and explanation to come!)

Mango jeans, AA lace bodysuit, ring from 85th Ave shop in my hometown, heels given to me by Caroline & necklaces passed on by my Granny.

Now for braving my German presentation!

The only thing getting me through this silly sketch in which we, as an advertising agency, are meant to promote German as a foreign language to a potential client, is pretending I'm a character in Mad Men and that ad about learning English as a foreign language... you know the one:

Monday 23 November 2009

I'm never waiting for you again. Ever.

Cyril is going to kill me.

Honestly, these days, this is all I want to be doing. Sofa. Blankies. Tea/coffee. Robes. TV. Snuggles. Fireplace.

The rain's getting me down, man. In a bad way.

Sorry that my mum & little brother had to come visit in this. We sludged through Stanley Park like troopers, though. My brother was even thoroughly delighted about carrying an umbrella - too much so, really - since they are utterly useless in my beloved desert-of-a-hometown.

Wednesday 11 November 2009

Let's get together. All around. Every day.

I am in a hardcore shopping mood as of late. Thrift shopping, mostly. But Etsy tabs always seem to be open on my Firefox... I don't know how that keeps happening... really...
Now, this is all good for my emotional well-being (I am a firm believer in retail therapy) but clearly bad for the ol' bank account!
So instead(although it's a bit late!), let's window-e-shop.

Inspired by the lovely 1940s day dresses Sally Jane Vintage has been wearing lately. She always has the most beautiful clothes & outfits!

My favorite Etsy 1940s dresses:

1940s Ruffle day dress

(Update: upon random blog hopping and linking, I realised this dress is from the store of one of my favorite blogs, The Snail and the Cyclops! Small world.)

I like it when you're grumpy for a change.

News, people. News.

1. I'm on Chicptoia! Style sites are like cigarettes; everybody has their favorite. Somehow I ended up there. You can find me here, if you want to play.

2. Through my new play place, I was offered a prime spot on American Apparel's Seen on Bloggers section! Here, (under Seen on Bloggers) you can see my photo(!) and link to Chictopia.

3. Soup is my favorite food. Ever. Especially when it rains.

Sunday 8 November 2009

I wish I was back there.

I should be doing a many number of things right now... but isn't that how nearly all of my posts start? Kind of.

First, though, I want to share this video:

Bo 18-10 from Microcut on Vimeo.

from my friend Marne. Isn't his nephew adorable?
He reminds me of Robin, one of the boys I looked after in Switzerland.
I'm looking forward to more videos from Marne. And reminds me how much I love making them.

Outfit? K.

H&M trousers & cardigan, vintage velvet blazer (my neighbours were having a yard sale and it was in the "tickle trunk" among other things. I went to pay for it and she said "oh, the kids I taught used to use those clothes for dressing up; you can just have them all!" um, score), scarf knitted by my granny and UO flats.

Shoo-bee doo-bee doo-wop

Say hello to Jay Brannan.
Cyril and I went to a concert of his at the Biltmore a few nights ago. He has a really fun personality, I think. You might recognize him from the film Shortbus.

H&M dress, cardigan & beanie (the dress has really neat details that were lost in this photo because it gets SO DARK too early. This also caused me to resort to taking pictures in the "hallway". Winter = hate), AA tights & thigh high socks, boots from Ebay, necklaces from my Granny & Cyril's mum.

Cyril is wearing a scarf, button-up & cardigan from AA.

Wednesday 28 October 2009

Ich kann sagen was ich will.

Vancouver is getting cold.
C and I bought a tiny heater just in time.

UO top, AA jeans, shoes from Caroline, necklaces are thrifted and from my Granny & her ring.
And I made that teacup! I miss doing pottery.

What are you dressing up as for Halloween?! I'm dying to know.
This year C and I are going to (at least) two parties to catch up on the
zero-attendance-at-parties last year.

Monday 26 October 2009

Fuzz can be hard to deal with. I don't mean the police.

I do realise that Thanksgiving was two weeks ago.
Call me tardy. Call me lazy. Call me BUSY WITH MIDTERMS THANK YOU.

Anyway, two weeks ago, I visited my family for Thanksgiving.

It had froze the night before I arrived, and to save the pipes from bursting, the orchardists had to leave their irrigation on, resulting in: magic.

In true English style, fried garden tomatoes for breakfast.
And my brother's pumpkin pie; lovingly made from scratch. (We didn't have it for breakfast. At least I didn't)

I miss them. Only two months to Christmas, I suppose.

(My hair is in pin-curls, tucked under my Granny's scarf, waiting to be slept on. I'm really excited to see how they will turn out! Show-and-tell, not to worry.)

Sunday 25 October 2009

Inside the warm, warm fire.

Procrastination creates beautiful things. Not-as-important-as-what-is-being-avoided things; possibly. But so worth it.

thrifted 50s cardigan (my new favorite), AA tights & dress, assorted necklaces, thrifted heels (which I did not wear all day; let's be clear on that)

I'm eating egg & bran porridge in preparation for my 5hr stint at the library. Does "egg & bran porridge" or "5hr stint at the library" sound more disgusting? Library. Yeah.

Actually the egg porridge is delicious. Weirdly interested? Find it here. (I added my own bran 'cause I'm just such a hippie. What.)

Sunday 18 October 2009

Sleep on a sea of predicament

I'm currently being whipped, big time, by school.

I've hardly noticed October waltz by, my favorite month of the year, and I'm afraid that with fast-approaching November will come: Winter. And then we will have rain and snow and sludge and cold and gloom until April.

I'm freaking.
There's nothing I can do about it; school has a steady Erin-whipping schedule until AU MOINS October 30. And I'm not even whipping school back.

Sometimes I feel like I'm in over my head. 3 Lit courses at once was a bad, bad, bad, BAAAD idea.

Sunday 11 October 2009

Reisen macht munter

Cyril and I went for a picnic a few weeks ago when it was warm enough out to go for a picnic.
Living a five-minute walk from the beach is living in glory. Glory.

Caprese salad with broccoli.

I am currently digesting on my parents' couch.
My mum puttering in the kitchen. My little brother listening to System of a Down in the dining room. Ah, family <3

Thursday 24 September 2009

Facts are facts, Frank.

Yes, that umbrella is a 100+ year old artifact. No, I should not be nonchalantly swinging it over my shoulder. Yes, I should be wearing conservator's gloves.

Thrifted sweater, heels & necklaces, UP jeans.

Assuming this whole potential job turns out as badly as I know it will, I am once again in search of employment. The day after my interview and a week before my "trial shift" I was back in the streets droppin' resumes to the familiar tune of we're not hiring right now.

On the up-side of life, our little apartment is nearing decoration completion!
I've got three words for it, and they're all the same: cute.

Jogging along the ocean? I think I might. Because I CAN.

Sunday 13 September 2009

She carried me home through wind and snow.

Fall

(Via Stylesightings)

Summer

Fall: basically, I want to copy this from head to toe.
Missing? Slouchy sweater thin enough to fit under my blazer, carrot pants, sweet-ass granny boots.

Summer: the epitome of today. Warm & happy, spent at the beach with my beau. The way life should me.

H&M top, Target skirt, thrifted belt & heels, gifted earrings & watch.

PS I have an interview at Mintage on Tuesday! Wish me luck.
